The rental and purchasing of pallets (or skids) are often an overlooked or underappreciated detail. Pallets however, are a useful and in many cases, absolutely necessary item businesses need in order to meet standards and be successful in their businesses.
Basic pallets are constructed of heat-treated wood products and formed in a box shape. In order for safe transport using a forklift, pallet jack or other devices to lift the pallet, there are specialized openings to allow for lifting. During transport, the weight on a pallet must be secured. This is done with the use of stretch wrap, strapping and shrink wrap. Though the proportions of a pallet vary with each country and each location, the most commonly used pallet in North America is in a square 42 inches x 42 inches for use in the grocery industry. A square pallet stops the load from tipping and provides stability. Other tailor made dimensions are used to accommodate loading dock doors, storage containers and warehouse specifications. When necessary, pallets may likewise be designed for basic doorways. Custom designs are obtainable to meet customer needs.
Plastic, galvanized metals, aluminum and engineered wood products are also in use in pallet construction. All types are designed with storage, transportation and stability in mind. According to the use of the pallet, different standards apply.
Originally the pallet was created to assist with export and import of goods overseas. The military benefited greatly from the arrival of ‘palletization’ as placing goods on pallets freed up men for other services. The pallet industry increased as the need for reliable cargo transport increased. The pallet has now become the standard used in the shipment of virtually any products or goods.
